The most precious gift from a 57 y.o. donor, next to his brave family’s decision to turn loss into hope, by authorizing organ donation.
Following the great efforts of the G.H.A “Evangelismos” ICU doctors, the donor’s organs were recovered earlier today, with the participation of surgical teams from 3 Hospitals. The 1st Surgery Clinic & Organ Transplant Unit of G.H.A “Evangelismos” – under the Clinic’s Coordinating Director Dr. Spyros Drakopoulos & with the surgical team being led by Dr Vasileios Drakopoulos – recovered the kidneys, supported by the Anesthesiology Department & the Nursing Staff of the Hospital, under the Transplant Coordinators Ekaterini Balaska & Dimitrios Pistolas, while surgeons from the G.H.T. “Ippokrateio” and the U.G.H. “Attikon” recovered the liver and the corneas respectively.
Vassilis Kalatzis & Konstantinos Botsakis, Surgical Residents at the 1st Surgery Clinic & Organ Transplant Unit, actively participated in the renal grafts’ removal process, always with a view to their education in transplantation.
Today is expected, according to the procedures coordinated by the National Transplant Organization, to find suitable recipient, who will receive the organs that were so generously donated by the family of the donor.
